As our Australian operations grow, we are expanding our engineering capability to support the development, build and commissioning of our drilling rigs.

About the Role

This role sits within our mechanical engineering team and plays an important part in ensuring our machines are robust, manufacturable and effectively integrated with hydraulic and control systems. You will contribute to the design of structural assemblies and mechanical systems while supporting integration with hydraulic and electrical systems across the rig platform, feeding improvements into future rig builds. Engineers who enjoy working directly with technicians, solving real-world machine problems and improving designs through hands-on development will be well suited to this position.

Key Responsibilities

Mechanical Design & Development

• Design and development of welded structures, fabricated components and mechanical systems for drilling equipment
• Create 3D models, drawings and bill of materials using SolidWorks
• Perform engineering calculations to validate mechanical designs
• Ensure designs are manufacturable and aligned with fabrication capabilities

Machine Integration

• Support integration of mechanical systems with hydraulic, electrical and control systems
• Work closely with controls engineers during machine development and commissioning
• Identify mechanical improvements that enhance machine performance, reliability and serviceability
• Capture commissioning learnings and implement design improvements into future builds

Workshop & Build Support

• Provide engineering support during machine fabrication and assembly
• Work closely with technicians and fabricators to resolve build issues
• Translate workshop feedback into design improvements

Commissioning & Troubleshooting

• Support commissioning and testing of drill rigs
• Diagnose mechanical and integration issues during machine testing
• Assist in identifying root causes and implementing design improvements

Hydraulic System Awareness

• Support integration of hydraulic components within machine assemblies
• Assist with routing, mounting and packaging of hydraulic systems
• Work alongside hydraulic specialists when troubleshooting hydraulic-related mechanical issues

Global Design & Build Support

• Provide engineering feedback to the overseas engineering team during the build of future rigs
• Capture lessons learned from prototype commissioning and translate them into design improvements
• Review drawings and assemblies to ensure updates from the prototype build are incorporated into future machines
• Support alignment between the Australian commissioning team and the overseas manufacturing team

Engineering Documentation

• Maintain high-quality engineering documentation including models, drawings and bill of materials
• Ensure designs comply with internal engineering standards and development processes

Systems You May Work On

• Mast and structural assemblies
• Feed systems
• Rod handling mechanisms
• Machine frames and fabricated structures
• Mounting interfaces for hydraulic cylinders and actuators
• Mechanical integration of electrical and control components

About You

Essential

• Degree in Mechanical Engineering
• 5+ years experience in mobile equipment, mining equipment or heavy machinery
• Strong CAD capability (SolidWorks preferred)
• Knowledge of steel fabrication and welded structures
• Understanding of mechanical component selection and machine design
• Experience supporting machine builds or commissioning

Desirable

• Experience with drilling equipment or mining machinery
• Exposure to hydraulic systems and hydraulic component integration
• Understanding of mechanical integration with control systems
• FEA experience
• Experience working closely with workshop fabrication teams
• Experience working with international engineering or manufacturing teams
• Experience supporting prototype-to-production design transitions
